slow turn over when hot

Post by FBJ » Tue Jun 07, 2011 6:30 pm

Hi all, I have a gsx1100sz kat, lovely bike, any way when it cold it spins over lovely and when it's hot ie say just ten miles pop in to get petrol go to start it and it sort of turns over really slowly sometimes. It's bugging me now.
I have tried 3 starter motors, a new starter solenoid, new wiring between the starter and battery and solinoid, cleaned all the connections, new starter switchgear.
It's not a totally stock motor, it's 1170 with ape springs, anyone else had this? if so how did you sort it?
Cheers FBJ

Have you checked the battery itself John??

I guess the only other thing that springs to mind is.. does the engine nip up a bit when it's hot. Is this the engine you had hot running problems with before (I remember you talking about the way it ruined your engine paint)

Sounds more likely to be an electrical problem so back to the battery.....can you reproduce the problem in your garage so that you can put a meter on it??

Does sound like an electrical problem. Got a spare battery you can stick in for a while? Perhaps some plates are shorting out when battery heats as it's charged, reducing available current?

Take a look near the end of my thread on regrec.... could it be heat expansion just beginning to crimp the pinion that connects the starter gear to the crank gear? i.e. thicker gasket for the generator cover required? That would result in slow turnover

just a far out thought
