GS 650 Katana Side Panel: Broken Plastic Lug

Post by craik » Thu Sep 12, 2019 7:09 pm

Hi,
One of the 3 plastic lugs attached to the LH side panel has broken off.
Is there any fix for this or is the only practical solution to locate a new side panel?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

We used a place in Worcestershire that plastic welded our pop up project side panels back together, and I mean they were trashed.".... You couldn't tell.
I will dig out the info .
In the past years I have tried alsorts from plastic welding with cable ties to various adhesives, with varying results ......in future this is the route I will travel.

Thanks Fossie. I had never even heard of plastic welding before. Just Googled a company near me that I could drive down to who claim they do it and will ring them tomorrow.
If I get no luck with them, will try your recommendation in Worcestershire.

Be handy to know the place in Worcestershire and also the name of the place Craik uses (and how he gets on). Again a service as time goes on that will be needed I guess.

As an aside there are some YouTube videos on how to do - might be worth getting some gash panels to give it a try!

So far no luck with the places I tried.
Will contact the Worcestershire company if Fossie can dig up the details.

If you’ve still got the bit that snapped off you might be able to fix it.
I had the same thing on my Kettle, I super glued it back in place then drilled a small (1mm) hole down the Center and then glued a steel pin in the hole. It lasted the five years I had the bike and is still going strong as far as I know.
There rubbish them Jap bikes lad they won't last five minutes! you want to get yourself a nice Royal Enfield!
A quote from my old dad 8-)

I started out with nothing and I’ve got most of it left!

If you identify what plastic the panel is and buy some plastic welding rods of the same type you can get some good results with the welder in the photo. This is a seat base I welded
