Katana Price (recent sale at Auction) FYI

Post by Uncle Bob » Mon Jan 08, 2018 9:08 pm

When I was taking to Chas Mortimer regarding transporting the 1100 I bought in Switzerland he mentioned he had just sold his 1100 Katana at the H&H auction at the start of Dec 2017.

As an idea of what people are really paying for something clean and standard, it went for £4550 plus buyers commission at 12.5% + VAT (so 15%) making the final sale price of £5232.50

Thanks for the post Uncle Bob. I have been watching prices for a while and a factual selling price post is really helpful as everything for sale is clearly pipe-dream prices. I'd been looking at an unregistered Jap import with "light" crash damage at £4750 which I felt was steep. The seller who I spoke to between Christmas and new year seemed tto think it would be sold by about now but it is still there.

Bear in mind that an Auction house purchase has no warranty or come back so its fair to expect a pukka Retailer to charge more or else they would not have a business......

Taking the pi&& however is another matter

We looked at that one for £4750, which on the face of it is a touch steep, as it need regeristering etc , all the work and parts are available and it is a later model jap market only. So some may say rarer.

A bike is only ever worth what you are willing to spend.
But an actual realistic proper price from the real world is helpful as an indicator.

The 2 recent bikes I have bought from dealers (the TZR250 and the Suzuki X5 (and paid more for as I wanted to just ride)) were both less than as described and needed quite a lot of work to get them road worthy. If the dealers had been local it might have been easier to take them back but now with the internet etc its easy to buy from almost anywhere and I used dealers for those as they were in Wales and Holland (I'm in Norfolk) so wanted (I thought) an honest opinion and description of the bikes as I was buying unseen from a distance and paying more than private.

Where as the recent private bikes I have bought (Vstrom, 2 * 1100 katana and 400 Katana) have all been great for the money paid - if you can get a an honest private seller then that is the way to go as far as I'm concerned. If you look at those dealer Katana's they aren't really anything special, as has been pointed out, for the money they are asking.

PS my 1100 from Switzerland arrived on Tuesday but I just had to stick in the garage unseen, as after just getting over 2 weeks of flu, my little 'un passed a stomach bug to me. Deep joy! So sorry if I sound miserable above - I am.
