help registering a Kat
Hi folks. Just purchased another Kat. It was supposedly brought into the UK 16 years ago from from Canada. Import papers lost and never registered. Rather than break it i would rather recomission it. Whats involved in getting it registered?
Thanks John

Re: help registering a Kat
About 4 years ago, I registered a Canadian FZ750, 1987 model, which had been only used for track days and then sat in a container since it's import.
Adding to what H says, there may also be outstanding import duties. I found that due to the age and value of the FZ, HMRC were not interested and sent me a letter confirming that. However, it would be prudent to make the inquiry with them.

Re: help registering a Kat
I'd second Sam on finding out about the import duty situation. I restored a Honda CT70 DAX from the US a few years back (late 90's) and when registering the local office which was still in Norwich and you could see someone classed it as "a found vehicle" so no duty, but I think they are tighter on that now. I was interested in a Suzuki GSXR50 (RB50 Gag bike) a couple of years ago - it was "new" unregistered and I did call DVLA or who ever decides the tax and they seemed to go to the duty having to be paid if no evidence to the contrary.
Interested in how you get on for reference sake.

Re: help registering a Kat
As has been said John quite easy if a used machine.
First thing is to get the dating letter if no paperwork, from VJMC costs about £30 or Suzuki which is £45 ish.
Then MOT , with frame number in reg number box on certificate, insure it using the frame number. You insurance company will issue a certificate with frame number. BUT this will only be valid for a limited time.
If you still have a DVLA office local best go to them to fill in the forms it is quicker , they may decide that the bike needs a technical inspection..........but they won't know what they are looking probably.
Either fill in form had over the documents mentioned above and a cheque or similar for 6months tax and reg fee about £90 now and fee days later a letter with the reg number should arrive followed by V5.
Good luck.

The FZ had to be taken for inspection... "Oo, that's an old one" the guy said, and checked the frame number... inspection over...fossie wrote: they may decide that the bike needs a technical inspection..........but they won't know what they are looking probably..
Didn't even get it out the box trailer.
