Re: Yay for the 400!
The bit of tube under the carbs is for that reason, checking float heights .
The manual does say 1.5 turns out but that is factory , after the jet has been played with it will vary unless new o rings are fitted with new springs.
If you have got a 400 started easily. You are on a winner, after that it is just balancing because the movement from tick over to go is such a small amount until 7 grand and hell breaks out.

That's actually a quite good design on it! See not all badfossie wrote:The bit of tube under the carbs is for that reason, checking float heights
Any tips for bending the "tang" that controls the float height? I'm conscious that if I break anything getting a replacement quickish will be a PITA.
In the parts and service manuals I got from Damian, they both say 1 3/4 for the pilot air screw. There was an engine and carbs on Ebay for £125 just before Christmas I wish I had bought now, but at the time I hadn't even looked at the bike so had no knowledge of what I needed.
Not sure how JMac is getting on with his carb rebuild, but hopefully the guy who is setting up for him will do the float heights - I have the info from the service manual - but basically if the carbs are off the bike then then tops need to be 10 degrees from the horizontal to take the level measurement.
I will still be after a few bits (inc the top still), and a spare float would be good.

Re: Yay for the 400!
Update: Float heights done and needle valve (fuel) all checked and it starts nicely and runs well - possibly some top end of rev range fueling issue but not too bad - it's been standing 5 years so am going to put some miles on it first and see how it goes.

Re: Yay for the 400!
I love people who have been there beforefossie wrote:Top end fuelling issues ......aftermarket pipe? Airfiter genuine and new.?
Yes, the 400 has a Yoshi on it. Airfilter I will take out and check but looked pretty clean down the hole. I take it it's a process of just larger main jets and finding what works? It had the standard 85's in there when I cleaned them. It isn't something I have done before. Any recommendation of where to start or what to go up to first?

Re: Yay for the 400!
on the larger air cooled motors, a pipe usually adds a jet size and raises the needle a notch.. ish
... but you can get a better idea yourself doing plug chops on wot then clutching it/hitting the kill switch. see the colour they're burring there and adjust accordingly.

Re: Yay for the 400!
Carb tricks know how would be most welcome as it's an area I have never visited (tuning wise) as mine have always been standard. Some of that Belgian beer is strong - I better get the info out of you before you have had too many.
Myself - I am looking forward to ordering a Blonde Bush or 2 for the night

So up one size on the 400 would be to 87.5 then...? Stupid question but just making sure.
The 1100 got a new Eagle pipe as well so that probably needs doing. I aren't going to have time before going to do though, so hopefully all will be OK with it. Probably put the db killer back in as that will probably help for now, but doesn't sound as good.
