Petrol Tank for 400 ssn
Hi lads,
My katana could do of a tank, the owner before the last one thought that the brush will
a good idea to paint the bike.
The result is terrible.
So I was thinking instead of having to sand all it back, probably get rid off the dent, filler and paint back I could safe myself some hassle and get a second hand one in a good nick I will save at least 1 day on this.
I could redo the other tank in the future.
I found a tank which does not look so bad and which is up the road from me but I am wondering if all the Katana tank will go on my 400, or not?
if not which one are compatible if any ?
Cheers
Arnaud

Re: Petrol Tank for 400 ssn
A 250 tank will fit the 400 unfortunatley the others look thesame and indeed nearly fit but the mounting is different.
The 400 tank is a very rare beast in un rusted through condition , once is comes off a bike the old petrol dissolves the interior.

do you have any idea, how much it will be for a new one?
Just wondering.
It seems to have some rust in my tank, I am not quiet sure how bad this can be for my tank.

Re: Petrol Tank for 400 ssn
I look it up tonight and it is actually not as bad as I thought.
There is a dent but it does not seems that important.
Does anyone try the technic of warming up and cooldown to remove a dent?
I am half tempted to do it over a weekend, sanding back to the bare metal, remove the dent, then prime and paint and that is it
Will see let's get her running properly.

Re: Petrol Tank for 400 ssn
I know the technic of drilling a hole or weld a washer on it and use the slide hammer to get this back. But in this two cases you have to weld back and you have to use oxy/acetylene I think as mig weld will be leaking after.
But I don't have a setup oxy/acy, and it is also a bit hard to avoid distortion.
So I am looking for a process without any of that, and I found this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7M1Wc5gTkRI
I am wonder if somebofy had a go to that technique?

Re: Petrol Tank for 400 ssn
empty the fuel first and swill it out, put the kettle on, when it boils have the tank sat ready in a plastic bag, now, put your bike jacket on, your helmet and your gloves(ok it looks extreme, but skin is always best still attatched to the arms and face i recon!!) now, you need to be quick with this, working outside and with the safety gear on, empty the entire kettles boiling contents into the tank, put the filler cap on as quick as you can, and quickly wrap the plastic bag round the top of the tank. now, pick it up and shake it like fuck. the resulting steam that comes from you shaking the tank will pressurise the inside of the tank, if the dent isnt too major, it may well be enough to pop it back out. ive done this on other tanks and its worked, though i havent ever tried it on a kat tank, well, not yet!!

Interesting technic for streching metal.
I will see about that tank when the bike will run smoothly.
To be honest I am starting to wonder how I end up buy another non runner vehicule...
