Rechromed GSX1100S Fork Legs Advice

Post by Uncle Bob » Wed Dec 17, 2014 2:46 pm

I've had my 1100 fork stanchions rechromed by Philpot ( http://www.pittedforks.co.uk ) who I have used before a long time ago for a 650 Katana and I normally see recommended on forums.

The original leg has the bottom 1/4 (approx) at a slightly smaller diameter (see image below)
Original Stanchion.jpg
However the rechromed legs have come back and they are very nice, but they are the same diameter all the way down to the "piston" at the bottom. See image below:

Will this matter (a lot) or not? Should I try them and see what happens or should I raise it with Philpot? It took 10 - 12 weeks to get them done, so I'm not sure if a) they'll be happy b) assuming they will grind that bit down, how long it would take.

Has anyone else had 1100 / 750 legs rechromed before and what were they like?

Rob

Cheers for advice - reassuring! I'll probably let Philpots know but use as is and if there are any issues at least I highlighted it. I won't be using the bike until about April (on SORN at moment) so won't know until about then,

Rich get out your micrometer and check to whether Mr P ground down top half or if they raised the lower section to be equal?

Lower section raised to be equal, so it's all OK as far as the fork seal is concerned.

Would it be worth asking them anyway as they must do hundreds of these and could probably give you an instant answer and peace of mind?

I have sent off the images to them and asked, just as you say Chris. Mainly just to get it logged with them. As I won't know how they work until I start using it April time. With my luck they will just go wrong before the Belgium trip in June as per EK6! I couldn't bare turning up on the VStrom again.

You must assume Suzuki wouldn't have machined them like that originally just for the hell of it, but I'm not going to race it, so as long as they work and it's reliable then I am happy.

I got Philpots to do mine but as the whole set of forks was grotty, I cheated and got them to do the lot.

So I can only assume that the stantions were chromed and re-ground like yours.

apart from a leaking Aunty-Dive valve that I sorted at the same time as swapping the springs they have been fine.

More reassurance which is just what I wanted. Hopefully will get time over Christmas to get it all back together. Santa is also bringing me a nice new Eagle Mach 7 exhaust, if he can fit it down the chimney!
