charging issues - again
getting to the netley marsh show i had to bump my 750s2. runs perfect when running but not charging, after some advice i set about tracing issue......
1. no proper connectors .. all chocky blocked FFS !!!!!
2. stator all three leads in pairs 1.2 ohm, infinity tyo earth
3. regulator.. no manual so i have searched tinterweb for a table, none found FFS again !!
4. there are some dubious combinations of short and infinity which leads me to believe its rec/reg. ( ie bk/w to red is infin both ways , red to white/red is open both ways )
bike starts fine from a freshly charged external battery, at 4000 revs it has 12.5 ( same as before turning key on and before starting )volts across battery... having lights on or off makes no difference at all.
help !! please ???? i have a basic meter but nothing posh so can do basic measurements only

Re: charging issues - again
ok, quick guide. multimeter set to buzzer (continuity) 3 phases of genny (obviously disconnected, engine off) any pair of wires should have continuity to each other, that is, if wires are numbered 1,2,3, then 1 and 2, 1 and 3, and 2 and 3, should all have continuity to each other. if any doesnt, the genny is fucked, now test continuity from each phase to earth, there should be none. any continuity to earth and the genny is fucked. ok, so plug it back in and fire the engine up, put the meter to ac (wiggly line over straight line) and check the ac output, voltage depends on engine speed, but important part is that all 3 phases should be the same, if not, genny is fucked. now you need to know this before you buy a reg rec cos a fucked genny will make it look like a fucked reg rec. although its possible it may be both. normally the static continuity/earth test will be enough to show one way or tother!
electrex are best for reg recs, cheap and reliable.

Re: charging issues - again
Is it a SUZUKI reg rec, does it have 5 wires or 6 ? Is the alternator wired direct to reg rec or using the daft Suzuki system?
Is the earth lead of reg rec direct to battery , which is the best method to avoid crud stopping the full contact.
Sounds strange I know but how good is the battery, I have known batteries loose the ampage , so a basic test back to battery just reads the voltage though you should be getting 13.5 at least back to it.
The fact the lights on makes no difference sounds like reg rec issue.

hi steve
when is good for you ? or maybe easier to ride to you as it runs , just wont start lol
I contacted electrex via email about a replacement but am still awaiting an answer as my 750s2 isnt on their list so not sure which one is the replacement.

Re: charging issues - again
I replaced my s2 alternator from them, my old one is still in the shed I can let you know dia, but I thought you checked the windings & all was ok.
give us a call & we can sort something out, I've got a washing machine motor to fix tonight, otherwise it's hand washing
Just need to train the kids to do it
