Petrol spillage.

Bit of a problem today Went out for a spin on the pop up and needed some fuel. Started filling up and had a nice pool of petrol under the bike!! Soon as i stopped filling up it stopped !!! Am sure i had the nozzle in far enough not for it to have been the drain hole at the top of the filler hole. Couldnt work out were it was coming from either and by the time i got home there was no trace of where it was coming from.

Any ideas?

If the bike started all right straight after filling up then I wouldn't worry, the only way putting fuel in and it draining out under the bike, other than the drain outlet ,would be if the floats stuck and the fuel went in to the air box. But that would also send fuel into cylinders. Leading to hydraulicing.

Thanks Fossie. What about the drain tube from the top of the filler cap. Do these ever split inside the tank? Am thinking that if its cracked and the fuel gets to a certain level in the tank when filling, it will go into the tube and exit under the bike????

Just blew up the drain pipe whilst holding my finger over the hole at the filler end. seems ok. lots of pressure no sign of a hole Only thing i can think it is is maybe the float in the carb got stuck for a second or two or a seam on the tank high up has a split. will have to take the tank off and have a looky

Carbs more likely mate.
When I balanced the carbs I blanked off the vacuum pipe but I still had petrol on the floor from a dodgy float valve. Never does it otherwise so I ignore it!!!

Yep that's the answer , make like an ostrich , bury your head and forget it until it does it again, otherwise you will be forever chasing answer to a question that may not have one!
