750 popup... Regrec
Hi guys,
3rd year... 3rd regrec fried.
I go through one a year and have been using electrex ones.
Are the electrex one's shite and there's a better one to use?
Or is something else helping to fry them.
Once it's replaced all readings off the battery are fine, however only lasts about 10 months. I know when things are going tits when my indicator relay dies... Very shortly followed byhe headlight main beam - dipped beam lasts for a while. Usually kills the battery too. Bollox
Cheers in advance for any help guys

Re: 750 popup... Regrec
I,ve had 2 reg recs in 20 years, Though the 2nd one is superdeam one so there isn't a fault in there normally. (the original was bodged by a former owner.
All I can suggest is there is an earthing issue.
Also do you ride with the headlight on, if it is off not all the phases are in operation.

Headlight permanently on, I prefer to be seen.
Popup function works awesomely (touch wood) and no other bulb/levy issues.
Will check all cabling, bike runs a dream - not a single issue with it until I start seeing 19v off the battery once the regrec has died... Then it doesn't go very well
So you'd recommend superdeam?

Re: 750 popup... Regrec
To be honest most of my bikes have superdream ones.
The most important thing is to wire the alternator wires direct to reg/rec, so by passing the loop through the lighting circuit.
The last time I did a reg/rec I used one disigned ton a gs but wired it as above.
IF you use a superdream one , join red and black together, then red of bike. 3 yellows to alternator and GREEN to battery earth,

Im with fossie there. ( there's a first)
Bypass the wiring to the headlight switch, if the contacts are dirty the lights can still work but the rectifier circuit can still be restrictive to the current.......when the light switch is turned off the voltage is supposed to go through the switch but the contacts get gunged up and dont let the voltage go anywhere....so it burns aout and does the same thing even with lights on...if the contacts are gunged up. You could try cleaning the switch contacts but it's a fiddly job and it could happen again!
So
Bypass the switch!

Re: 750 popup... Regrec
Did you replace just the reg/rec? If so check the output direct from the generator as that may well be buggered. If so the reg/rec will control it for a while but may be working overtime to do so and not lasting very long.

Re: 750 popup... Regrec
does sound like the alternator is u/s, on the gs range generally, the reg rec dies, this takes out the alternator, if you only replace 1 item then the other takes out the new part
replace both with electrex items and should be ok
