Sorry, when I said lack of power loss I'm saying there isn't any loss. Still pulls well in all gears. I feel I'm being a pain now but other thing is when decelerate hard from top speeds that's when I get smoke even after warmed up.
I wish I was a bloody mechanic and knew what I was talking about

Thank you. I wish you were local :) There are not many (if any) kat owners in Birmingham WHY?

Im with FBJ here, sounds very much like valve stem seals to me.
If it get worse on the over run with the throttle shut its sucking anything it can and that'll be oil down the inlet valve stems. Dont buy the cheap ones on ebay, always use gen Suzuki stem seals.
As for rings I recently bought some from ebay in the USA they were listed as GS1000 Katana. I bought them just in case I need them in future, as i'll have to do mine sooner or later, as mine smokes a little bit on start up, but my Kat 1000 has only done 6400 miles but was sat for 18 years........so the seals would have hardened with time.

The head gaskets on the 1000 are made of steel so you can probably use that again if you dont damage it removing the head, you just need a clean it down to bare metal and then a spray with some sperex VHT paint which will help it seal and also cure as the engine warms up.

Hope this helps!

Thank you both. I'm starting to think I can sort the issues out myself........and if that does it, brilliant :) If not I've been given the view that the price is about right and with engine left in Bike might be a bit cheaper than first quoted. Cheers

You know u have to remove the head to do valve stem seals don't ya. An I would def change the two front centre head bolt o'rings. An I would also replace the valve springs. Oh an as Bobster said def use genuine Suzuki seals.

and using expensive oil in a kat motor is a waste of time. use what was reccomended for the gsx motor when it was built. mineral oil like castrol gtx or duckhams is good enough for a stocker. modern synths are too thin and will find their way out of the motor sooner or later. in fact, if i were you id do an oil change to something more low tech before throwing cash at a rebuild.

Just a quick update
Bike is now booked in with Roy Hanks in Birmingham and he's starting job on 21st August :D .....so will soon know what needs doing.

Gaskets and seals all sourced at good prices but as suspected rings more difficult. the best deal I can find is through a company called CMS based in Netherlands. They do standard and oversized.

Standard Piston Ring Set for 1982 1000 SZ is 45 euro's, if rings are the issue and I replace all, that's around £140, so looks like this is what I'll be going for......unless anyone knows of a better deal :?:
