ok, basically, alternator generates voltage, the faster the bike spins it, the more it makes, rev it enough and you will get a battery boiling 20+volts. and to compound this, the alternator is a three phase one making alternating current or ac, so this needs rectifying to dc so it will work on your bikes dc electrical system, and also regulating down to a more managable 14ish volts, this used to be done by seperate components, but is now done by the combined regulator/rectifier, the excess voltage is dumped to earth by the reg rec, by essentially making heat. hence your reg rec has cooling fins to get rid of this heat. so, as has been said before, CHECK YOUR EARTHS!!! i poorly earthed reg rec wont be able to get rid of the heat and this will fry its delicate tiny metal brains!! but charging probs are usually simple to diagnose, once you are sure that youve good earths and no broken cables, if its making volts but too much, then its your reg rec!

I usually find if i be patient with something and give it a bit of thought the answer will prevail. I usually have my moment of clarity as soon as i wake up or when im in the shower.
It occurred to me that the charging system can be individual and theres no reason for the earth and the power to be running through the loom, so i did some research and found this.

Upgrading to one of those makes a lot of sense to me. Whaddayareckon?

Why dont you just send the faulty Rec/reg back to electrex.............it's obviously not working correctly!
