I had exactley this issue with a 650 that someone had put twin spots on. UUUH!
Put standard light on and what you describe happened .Changed the 3 pin connector to the bulb and it is fine now.

Its got a new 3 pin connector Fossie
I cant get my head around the fact that its pulling volts FROM the bulb up the high beam wire.As soon as i pull the high beam wire off, the dim high beam light goes off ! so it must be getting voltage from the bulb. I even took the new three pin connector apart and stuck the spade terminals straight onto the bulb in case they might be shorting on each other !!! I even measured the volts on the high beam terminal with the block off and just the earth and low beam spades connected onto the bulb, and it was still putting 5 volts to the high beam terminal on the bulb !
Bollocks. It can stay like it is.

have you cleaned the contacts in your switch? disconnect the bulb and then check the voltages at the bulb holder. if its still showing voltage on both high and low beam connectors at the same time, then it HAS to be the switch cos thats the next point up the line. the switch i have is from a slide carb gs550 and is similar to yours, except it has a metal casing rather than the plastic one. id reccomend taking the switch off and dropping it in an ultrasonic cleaning bath if you have access to one. cos it sounds like there is continuity between both lighting circuits.

I gave it a bit of a squirt with some contact cleaner John. Will have another look tomoz if i get a chance, but i am pretty sure that i am NOT getting a voltage on the high beam wire. If i remember right i get voltage (and a dim warning light) when i connect the bulb. To me its like there is continuity within the bulb.
I dunno. Its done my head in
Thanks for all the help.
Am going to check all the earth connections again as well.

Because this plays on my mind

i popped out to the garage - sad git that i am.
John, I took the high beam wire off the headlight and stuck my meter on it. With just ignition on i am reading .01v when i put low beam on i am getting .03v - so some continuity then ? is that enough volts to light up the idiot light dimly ?
