american spec kat 1000s got the same cvs as the 1100, this was to comply with the americans emmissions laws. at the time. the slide carbs were deemed to be too 'dirty' emmisions wise for the americans.

I concur with all of the above. The UK 1000 Kats numbers start GS10X while the US 1000 Kats start GT72A. As mentioned the US and Canadian bikes had CV carbs and were missing the black fins under the front fairing. The slide carbs fitted to the UK 1000's were Mikuni VM32SS, I think most of the similar VM carbs fitted to the GS range were smaller bore.

What exhaust do you have?

Thanks John and Richiemouse, I think from what you've said and Bobsters thoughts I have a UK GSX 1000 with a few mods. As Bobster was saying at some point someone has had the slides off and replaced with CV's. As the bike was never totally original I can live with that..at some point I might try to obtain a set of Slide Carbs.

The exhaust is a 4 to 1 S/S Jama. Last question from me. I have currently got a rear tyre 120/90. All the info I have read about this suggests it should be a 130/90 :?: :)

s/be a 130/90 yes.... presume you have a 17" rear rim?

18" rims used a 120/90 and were on the 750's......

some merkin market kats had slightly different tailpieces with the light slightly further back, and iirc all north american spec bikes had reflectors on the side of the forks and the tailpiece. i suspect someone has in the past either had bother with the slightly odd carburation of the slide carbs and swapped them for cv's or has realised when they were selling it that a set of slides were worth selling seperately especially as the cvs were so cheap to obtain.
