I agree with you - -it's about the shape and design there of. That's why I like the modified kats myself (like Pedda's or the Icon 1000) as they still look like a Katana, although personally I like mine standard. The Fiat 500 sold so well because it was a modern take on a recognisable design like wise Mini , like. Vw beetle. HOWEVER ....once they cornered the market the ethos was lost a the next generation had lardy arses etc and looked sod all like the original......this would and will happen to a relaunched Katana.
You could argue that is the case of the Popup katana really, as OK the tank is Katana(ish) but the rest? It's still on here though (and I'm fine with that and did have one years ago).
