custom looms cost a small fortune.... not that tough to repiar the melted one imo. just need a similar loom and start substituting wires. good oportunity to fix any other issues with it and retape it at the same time.

Hey everyone.

Thanks for the offers & comments. I'm just waiting for the insurance assessor to contact the mechanic & I'll have to take it from there. I already have a spare tank, fairing & fairing lower - stuff that I'd picked up over the last 26 years of owning the bike. My mech tells me that the parts he may struggle with are wiring loom, coils & a few other electrical bits - so many thanks to those of you that have kindly offered with parts.

I'm surprised that it built up enough heat over the time to fire it - I've had it ticking over many times before with no problems. Would this not be a problem if a garage was running a bike during a service, or if you're sitting in traffic?

Again, thanks to everyone with their comments & concerns

Your going through the insurance ?, be careful if they write it off they might not let you have it back and even if they do it'll be classified a write off. I wouldn't bother and just fix it.

It's possible the generator shorted and cooked the wiring, I've had this before but saw it smoking before it did too much damage, still melted a fair bit of wiring though.

Yeh - I'd thought about that, but as it has an agreed value of £8500, I guessing that it'd have to be a hefty repair bill for them to write it off

But if the parts are no longer available to fix your bike they will right it off............So as Arnica2612 says, think very carefully before you involve your insurance company!

If it is UK bike in top condition, then it could be argued with insurance companies that is worth that much. Although a higher premium will be applied.

But would it still be worth that much as a Category B or C?

To you or me (if it was ours) maybe, but on the open market to a well heeled tyre kicker, maybe not.

I would be tempted to start a thread on the Technical bit with some photos, and see what the Denizens* of the forum/club can come up with.

I 'm in agreement with the masses here , insurance company are very likely to write it off because they cost it with new parts only which are not available anymore and if they are labour costs at £45 per hour min soon add up.

How ever you don't have to accept their offer but if they have catogorisied it they not insure it again.

For £2500 you could buy another and take your trick bits off your and fit them.
Should you have the money hanging about,,,,,! Thought not.

gotta agree.... collect it and tell the insurance not to bother. get damaged bits off and repair yourself. you have a good few spares yourself and the rest should be easy enough to source/repair or replace.

likes already been said, no matter which way you play it with the insurance company it's not going to be a win win by any means... all imo of course

I'm well aware that I am opening the Gates Of Hell by involving the insurance company. My problem is I have neither time, money, facilities or knowledge to do the necessary work myself. So unfortunately, I am at their mercy. I know that it could go belly side up - but that's the risk I have to take.

I'll keep you posted on how it goes with them
