Goop tyre sealant

Post by wraith » Sun Sep 05, 2021 10:41 am

Been using this stuff for years (it's the green stuff you put in your tyre and leave it in, by the way)
But the place I take my wheels to to have new tyres fitted, is tell me not to use it as it rots the wheel ?

Anybody had any bad experience with it or know whether it does rot the wheels?
Thanks

Personally , I just carry a puncture kit that I have displayed on here ...at work and play..100% success rate so never bothered with the gloop stuff , but have across rims that have used it and the rim edges ( sealing part) are corroded , this was said to be the mixture of road grim and water mixing with the bloops stuff , hence many tyre places won't repair tyres that have had it in them , some won't replace tyres on those rims because they can't be accountable.

Re Gloop. I recently needed to replace a worn rear tyre on a 650. easy!
two hours with a large hammer and tyre irons could not break the seal. Over to the local garage with an air hammer. same
result. Drilled a hole in the side wall just above the rim, large enough to insert a hacksaw blade and slowly cut the side wall off. Repeat on the other side to reveal what's left of the tyre welded to the inner rim. This I managed to remove with the help of a blow torch and scraper. So before you are tempted to use this auto seal, think of the consequences. Just saying.
