How do you get it off without a special tool? No chain on.

Thanks

Hmm..

you need one or other realy.

I have a pair of mole grip type things that are good for clutch centres as well that will grip the front sprocket.

Also if the chain is on then using a glamorous assistant holding the back brake on you can lock the back brake and hold the sprocket.

Or clutch cover off, in gear and lock the primary drive with something that will not damage the gear teeth. You must have something in your leather collection?  :o :o

or as above but strip clutch out and use the clutch centre holding tool, or have you not got one of them.

I think I would look at fitting up some kind of chain and locking the rear wheel arrangement if possible.
I would post you my mole grip type things but I'm not home 'till next Monday night

If you can't wait until it's back together and the chain is on then I would look at holding the clutch method as Kryten says. I was considering getting a holding tool of Ebay as they are cheap, but never used one before.

After fighting the one on my VStrom and failing (been on since factory) I would recommand a air wrench or similar cordless option. I couldn't move it, the chain just took the strain and stretched, so in the end I went up local car garage, took the sproket cover off up there, and they undid it so easily with the air wrench. Did up not so tight but enough and rode home and changed all over. The next time I did it OK but that was from my tighening from the previous time.

put the old chain back on. you only need to stick the old link through temporary. if you havent got an air ratchet gun, you will need the back brake, or you may get lucky if its not too tight

You can get way with out back brake by putting bar through the back wheel across the swing arm this will lock it , but you will need a long bar on the 32 mm nut to crack it off probably.
