Hi all
I've been thinking for a while on how difficult it would be to get a gsx750 engine into a gs550 frame while still keeping the tank and side panel locations .
Has anyone done this or even think of doing this
Pro,s or cons
I assume I will need to upgrade the brakes as well

Just a thought at the moment .......

Brakes are damn good on those 550's. Mine had the best brakes on any bike I had.

As we always say anything is possible.
It depends on ability and motivation really.

Which 750 engine are you visioning , the early ET s1 katana engine or the later ES pop up type engine.?

I'm not to sure on which engine.
It will most probably not be a katana engine .Just a standard gsx750 . maybe late 80,s early 90,s again depending on everyones thoughts .
My expertise in this kind of engineering is very limited so the idea is the find the right model of engine that will fit reasonably well .

What is everyones recommendations ?

Here's a project with a 7.5 gixxer engine in a 5.5 kat. German Katana site, but lot's of pics. Pop-up or ES engines aren't too far away size-wise from gixxer engines, I guess. Could be worth a try.

So it'll be an oil boiler engine in a 550 Kat frame with maybe some uprated cycle parts.

Hmm. You may want to have a look in the "Projects" section. :)

I believe that the 750 engine is a smidgen taller than a 600 and clashes with the tank and fuel tap.

And as Fossied says; anything is possible :D :D

Hi I`ve just put a GSX750 FW motor in a 550 see projects under café kat.

The 750 "oil cooled" motors do vary in height not sure about GSXR motors but there are long stroke and short stroke versions so probably. The motor I used was a few mm taller than the 750 f motor I used for the mock up build. This was enough to hit the tank underside. The other thing to bear in mind is the carbs which can also hit the tank underside. Although the 750f motor was shorter the mikuni carbs that it used are taller and so hit the tank underside.
Putting the motor in the frame is quite simple just a few modified engine brackets, its all the bits around it that cause the problems.
believe the 600 motors are slightly shorter as has been previously mentioned so would be less problematical.
