hub spacer 650 shaft casing help

Post by pete650kat » Sun Feb 16, 2014 7:18 pm

Hi Peeps, Just getting around to building the 650 up and come across a small prob. Ive located a pair of the three spoke us wheels and on fitting today ive come across a couple of probs . The Clymer manual refers to a spacer which sits inside the shaft casing that you must ensure is in before fitting the back wheel. I cant recall taking this space out but I also cant find it. ive tried fitting the wheel without just to see what effect it has and the effect is that the wheel is solid and wont turn! Does anyone know the part number for this spacer so I can search for one as it doesn't seem to be listed on any of the parts manual pdf I have. Secondly i've fitted the front wheel with discs and although the spacers are in the correct place the right hand disc is closer to the fork leg than the left? I cant think that the us wheels would be different to the star pattern ones but im wondering if the combo of uk discs on us wheels has thrown me a curveball. Any help appreciated.

As mentioned in pm the problem with front wheel is the way the spacers are fitted, both Z and D wheels are the same as are the forks on all models. Unless the wheels are from a GL model but the rear would be 16" and the front single disc, so the issue is the spacer through the bottom of the fork, and the top hat that fits to the n wheel bearing. If the spacer in the centre of the wheel between he bearings is missing then the spindle will push the bearing.

This is the same problem with the rear wheel , without the spacer that butts up inside the wheel the spindle tightening will just keep tighten until it can go more.

Found one in the garage, yours for £15 incl postage, :o ;)
Would have been £5 incl to club member. :P :D

Also checked out the front axle issue. The spindle goes from the left, through a spacer that has a lip on it that buts up to the speedo drive , through the wheel which has a spacer between the bearings , but unless the bearings have been out should still be there, through the top hat spacer ,through the forks With a washer between the fork and nut.
If the washer is missing the forks flex enough to bring them to disc as the thread carries on through the fork bottom .........I knows wot I means
If the wrong 1st spacer is used you loose about 2 mm clearance, about what you are missing.

cheers for all that. i'll check out the front spacer issue soon as I can and i'll have one last look in my 6x12 shed to see where the original rear spacer could have gone as unless the Bermuda triangle has moved it should be in there somewhere?
