I was trying to replace the LH-front footrest on my bike, which has seen better days, with a new one.
The footrest seems attached by a single bolt held in place by a split pin, and I thought it would be a simple job of removing the split pin and pushing out the bolt.
However, even applying oil overnight to free up the bolt and using a hammer, it seems stuck.
Any ideas on how to best remove the bolt (and peg)?

You'll prob find the cotter pin has seized or worn and has 2 grooves in the pin not allowing the pin to be reomoved. Try turning the pin 180 degrees and give it a whack with a pin punch and hammer!

I can get the split pin out easily enough, but not the bolt it secures!
PS I'm getting confused. I thought a spilt pin is the same as a cotter pin, it's just the latter is the American name for it...

A split pin is just that. a pin that splits.
A cotter pin is a threadless bolt that has one side usually chamfered or notched , it is a tight fit thus requiring no nut.
The pedals on a bicycle are held on to the crank with such an item.
