Regulator Wiring

Hi...having problems with Battery not charging on GSX 1000...traced to regulator with resistance on terminal checks all over the place

Purchased a new one from Electrex (RR10) and wiring colours not same, 3 yellows instead of yellow, White/Blue and White/Red on current one. Having checked with them, they have assured me it is the correct Reg and the 3 yellows all go to generator.
Currently on old Reg, w/b and yellow go to generator and w/r goes to light switch. they tell me to ignore light switch and connect their 3rd yellow to generator, which looks like g/w on original. It would also seem that this solution just bypasses the light switch
Does this make sense to anyone before I go ahead and fit it

Sounds right Jerry. I think i heard the same thing from someone on here as well.
Sure someone will confirm as well.

Hi Jerry
Yep that pretty much sums it up.
The three feeds from the alternator can either go the same way as the original wiring, or direct to the Reg/Rec. The Reg/Rec doesn't mind where the ac feed comes from.
This gives you 2 options:
Connect the 2 alternator feeds to any 2 yellow wires on the new Reg/Rec and the third to the loom. Then connect the return from the light switch to the remaining yellow on the Reg/Rec, this would be as Suzuki intended. That way only 2 phases are providing the power for the bikes electrics, until you switch on the lights. When you switch on the lights the 3rd phase gives additional power to compensate.
Alternatively you connect all three alternator feeds to the Reg/Rec and ignore the feed/return on the light switch. All this means is the Reg/Rec is controlling the voltage out to the bikes electrical system with a full 3 phase full time. You will have 2 unused wires at the loom that can be taped or secured out of the way.
The perceived reason for this is that when the bikes were used without lights the 3rd phase dissipated its voltage ('cos it's generating voltage all the time the engine is running) through the other phases. This may well be a contributary factor to failed alternators.
Oddly enough I had a US spec 550 a while ago and at the handlebar switch there was a loop installed to compensate for the lack of light switch.
