I did ask about this a while back but forgot what the answer was

I got a nice cheap tank on ebay for my 550 but the tank appears to be a 650 one as it has the fuel sender thing attached. However on the otherside of the tank (opposite the fuel tap) there is another small pipe coming out of the tank. Whats that for ?

Hmmmm there shouldn't be another pipe , unless it is for the water overflow from under the cap. BUT the 550/650 didn't have one.
Either way it is just goes to nowhere , it is a breather/ water vent.

Only thing i can think of its a pipe to draw petrol from that side of the tank.

No, Suzuki never fitted twin draw pipe to bikes in the 70's or 80's or since i believe.
The pipe can only be an overflow pipe as fitted to pop up /400/250 etc.

Thats the over flow from the fuel sender.
which means it is from a 83- 84 model gz or mz 650 or 550.
It goes Nowhere pete believe me it is just a breather.

the fuel gauge sender is under there isn't it?..... that "cover" with a pipe out of it is in case the sender seal leaks... the "vent" should have a pipe on it that leads away from a hot engine.

the sender itself has a seal and that cover also has a seal. if the sender seal starts to leak that secondly sealed "vent" catches what has leaked and it's pipe takes it away
