Hose length not important, only to allow clearance and fitting of filter. I guess your talking of the top breather cover.

hose might be handy to route it out of the way so any oil mist blown out can either condense in the hose and run back into the engine, or else not cover the coild and electrics under the tank!

What you want is a little K&N breather filter. loads on ebay.

if its going onto the oil filler cap then you need a length of hose or else you will cover the bike with oil. the clutch basket spins anti clockwise when viewed from the r/h side of the bike, this tends to fling oil upwards off the basket and right onto the oil filler cap, a length of hose allows this oil to run back into the engine rather than get flung all over the inside of (and thus out of) a filter.
