EBC FA065 look like the current ones so I've ordered them. Here's hoping! Cheers all.

Re: Popup front brake caliper id puzzle
The 750 ES pads areFA051 , look quite similar to 65 .
The only reason I brought it up was , clearly someone has fitted sliding calipers to the correct forks, the spacing between bolts must be the same ....but the 750 ES has a 16" like the pop up. Hence the slightly different pads......maybe 1100 550 650 s1 brakes fit but the are 19" front wheels.......
Just applying a logic that maybe over thinking the issue.......let us know.

Re: Popup front brake caliper id puzzle
I always thought that the mounting hole centres were different for the ES omwards because of the change of design of the calipers.
Using a 16" wheel would reduce the available space between the rim and the edge of the disc.
What are the disc diameters? that would have an effect on the performance of the brake. The SD type caliper might have a bigger pad area but part of it may end up unused if it is outside of the disc swept area.
I guess it is down to the pads having to fit the caliper, and then the caliper having to fit the the fork mountings.
The calipers in question here are easy to check as the pads can be fitted to the support bracket before the piston assembly goes on. it will be clear if they are in the right place.
Looking at the photo's they certainly look OK.
My brother has a home market 750ES that he is rebuilding, I'll see if I can get him to photograph his calipers/disc and e-mail them to me. Might take a while as he spends more time away from home than me!
When the new pads arrive take some photos of the assembly and post up on here.

Re: Popup front brake caliper id puzzle
We are forgetting the S2 has a 16" and the brake pads are 051 as ES this is why I suggested he brakes are Es. The bolt spacing will be the same .
Because just saying 750 katana will bring up S1. If you ask wemoto or others for 1983 750 katana would you get pop up or S2.?

Re: Popup front brake caliper id puzzle
OK so I have had a more in depth loook at the offerings from WEMOTO and have got this:
750 S1/SZ (and GS550MX/MZ)

1100 SZ

1100SD

750 SE/S3/S4 (also GSX550 ES whatever)

750 ESE etc.

It would appear that the ED1 and ED2 Kats have the same front caliper, and that as far as EBC is concerned there is no difference between 750/1100 S1/SZ and S2/SD
ED3 has it's own that is interchangeable with the 750 ESE type
Also the ED1/ED2 type are very similar in appearance to those on the 750 ESE
So the best suggestion so far is that the existing pads are measured up and compared with the above.
I went to WEMOTO's as the diagrams are east to copy but compared to EBC own.
Oddly enought the 750 ET/EX is also listed as using the FA0051 although they did not use the 16" wheel
750 S1/SZ (and GS550MX/MZ)

1100 SZ

1100SD

750 SE/S3/S4 (also GSX550 ES whatever)

750 ESE etc.

Re: Popup front brake caliper id puzzle
From the outlines, the current pads are FA065 shaped (but of course they may not be the correct ones by the sound of it...).
As soon as the new pads arrive I'll assemble and bolt on the caliper to check the fitting and post photos.
In the meantime, I have also failed to order the correct boots that go over the caliper pins.
Assuming that I have the 550MX/MZ calipers I ordered a couple as shown on the fiche (59312-49000) and they aint right!
My original is shown below but the ones I ordered have a more regular profile.
Does this give another clue to the calipers?
Does anyone recognise the one below?
Arghh...

Re: Popup front brake caliper id puzzle
Hmm.
More pics I'm afraid, lots of them of the current set up.
Especially of the old pads as these will be the give away, both sides and with a rule in the pic so we can guesstimate the size.
Going to head off to a place of poor wifi access so might be able to post up some parts schematics later.....

Re: Popup front brake caliper id puzzle
Okay. Here are 4 schematics of the 3 calipers in question. I think we are taking a scenic route to a destination suggested earlier by The Boss but it keeps me entertained inbetween bit of control systems falling off!
S3/S4 Pop Up caliper not a good scan but enough:

750 ES/ESD:

Same again only the 1st was listed as an American Market bike

GS550MX/MZ GSX750/1000/1100 SZ + SD

Obviously: Thanks to CMS-NL for the scans....
