OK so it was over a week ago now but been up to my eyes in other stuff and now back at work...

I was supposed to be driving the U14's football team to Brooke for a match on the 28th when it was cancelled. So as Mrs Kryten had arranged to go out with one of our friends to walk our fluffy pooch. Jnr decided he was going to do some homework (!) I was left with only one option.

Get the bikes out!

Took the Speedtrip for a 70 mile run out to Fakenham and down the A1065 'til I picked up the B1145 and headed back towards Aylsham but turneed north to head up to Holt. It was a bit lumpy and grumbly until the fresh fuel worked it's way properly through the injectors and then it ran sweet.

Got home, no signs of life in the house so just swapped bikes and took the Kat for a similar run, but instead of going down the A1065 turned down past Pensthorpe until the B1145 hove into view. Got to Reepham and turned down to Whitwell for a coffee and cake. Then back over to Aylsham this time and back up to the coast.

Stopped for a photo opportunity near Alby



Kat was running reasonably well but still had the 4K in top fuelling issue whereby it felt really flat.

So during the week bikes out again in the sun and had a look at the Kat. Found #1 and #2 carbs pilot air screws at 4- 4 1/2 turns out and #3 and #4 at 3 1/2 as I'm sure I set them initially. The first 2 did not feel as there was much binding them to hold them in place so may have to resort to some RTV when I'm happy with the settings. Took it for a quick spin up and down the coast road and it felt a lot better. May have to have a play with the settings later on to see if 1/2 turn in or out improves things.

The pipe is a Marshall Deeptone. Sounds good without being too loud (Is there such a thing?) and does not mess up the carb settings. I know that sounds odd but I have a K&N filter in the standard air box and the Marshall, but the carbs are 34's on standard settings.

Intending to get it booked onto a dyno just to check the fuelling some time this spring.

... well you say it doesn't mess up the carb settings but I'd have thought a 4-1 and a freer flowing filter would have leaned things out.... thus the flat spot at 4K.... personally, i'd raise the needles a notch and see if the "pulls like a train" feeling returns... sounds like a classic "lean on the needles" setting to me in the midrange. quick n easy to change without pulling the carbs off too

When I had that pipe & filter I found mine ran best with the air box cover removed, although mine isn't an 1100.

Power delivery is smooth and generally pretty good. Full throttle (on private roads) is just one big surge of power. Starting, Tick-over and small throttle opening for the town is good. Just this 4K flatness and very occasionally a little hesitant coming back on throttle after going down a gear for a corner. My thinking was that it was leaning off on the pilot circuit as at that point it has an influence and I can't remember where the 3 1/2 turns for the pilot jets came frome as all my books say "Pre-Set" or "Factory Set". Will certainly try the needle lift as the carb tops are fairly easy to get at. Cheers

The Marshall is no Harris Works jobbie so I doubt it is flowing much more gas than stock, but it does still sound good.

I had heard that they run better without the airbox cover, and have seen some shiny examples for sale on webike.jp.

Err, mine has an stock Italian market R701~ Donkey in the frame

R701 is at least a better performing motor that the gs75x.... Better cams and cr
