I know there's quite a few of you on here from Manchester & I'm after a bit of advice.
Where are the best places to buy property & where are the areas to avoid (like the plague)???
Any help/advice would be gratefully received

Depends on how much you think is reasonable. .......remember what we think is reasonable price down south gets you a shed .
When you say Manchester do you mean Manchester or greater Manchester. Manchester city area is either flats .....sorry appartments that are modern soulless places that would be cheap by southern standards. But we'll out of he reach of people who live here, or housing areas with very mixed ethnic groups .
Salford ,Wigan,Cheshire, are all emcopassed in the greater Manchester scope.
By the way you only see salford on the news in a bad light, what they don't show is the BBC just moved there and the quays is all new modern builds, that will attract investestment very soon.
If you are looking for a by to let then both Salford and Manchester have busy uni!s within 3 miles of each other.
If you are looking to move up here the money from the sale of a house in your area will get something larger But selling to move south after a few years. Will mean downsizing. Just the market value.

and its worth remembering if you plan to commute that bolton and wigan are all in striking distance of manchester, im near preston but im only 40 mins away, go east and you can be up in the fells in half an hour, and go south towards cheshire and you will be into london house prices!!

What it is , is I've finally had a compensation payout from my clinical negligence case & while it's not to be sneezed at, it won't even buy me a garage darn sarf so I'm looking for a buy to rent property.
No point in leaving it in trhe bank earning bugger all interest, so bricks & mortar is best bet...so it's either here or abroad but it'd be nice to earn an income from it especially as my work capacity is greatly diminshed thanks to medical cock up, so that means the UK...
I've got about £60k to buy with but know nothing about the areas oop north, so thought I'd ask here

I blame the bastard estate agents

I know what you mean Mick, looked at a flat & the agent said "we've had an offer for it so if you want it you'll have to offer more!!!"

try looking on the fylde coast, blackpool area, 60k might buy you a buy to let in that area, large benefits population means that rental property is seldom left empty.

Moston is North Manchester area not somewhere I would choose to live but I know people that do live there, it is cheap for a reason lots of ex council houses and the people that lived in them.
Which means lots of opotunity for rents.
I rented out my house in Telford when I left there to come here, because I wasn't there or there abouts tenants flitted and left no addresses and took stuff including light fittings.
what I'm saying is you need somewhere someone you know can check up for you, don't expect agencies to espiecally those who are internet based.
Thant said now I know the peramiters I can ask about.
