GSX 1100 SD Cam Chain Tensioner Oil Leak

Hi
Anyone have any info/advice when changing the cam chain tensioner oil seal, do I have to remove the tensioner?
If so any tips on removal/refit.

Do you mean the gasket?
Item No. 17 in the picture below.

Apart from working in the space below the carbs, it’s fairly straight forward.

In order to stop the tensioner springing forward and sending plungers and balls and bits all over the place, you need to tighten up a lock bolt. Then it’s a case of removing the two bolts holding it on to the cylinder barrels.

I’ll dig out the manual tomorrow (Friday) and refresh my memory and post it up here.

Reassembly is, as they say, the reverse of dis-assembly :D

The bit you're interested in is this

On the left hand side of the engine release the lock nut and tighten up the lock screw. Only snug it up to the push rod..
Then tighten up the lock nut enough to prevent it all from moving.

Unbolt the tensioner and replace the gasket.

This is the lock nut and lock screw.

When re-fitting the tensioner you will need to back the push rod into the housing a bit.

Squeeze the push rod back in as the photo while turning the knurled nut anti clockwise after easing the lock screw off the push rod.

The more you turn the knurled nut the further the push rod will go go back.


When you have moved the push rod back enough, tighten the lock screw up to hold the push rod.

Reassemble it onto the engine with a smear of grease on the gasket.

Actually easier to do than write about :D

Thanks very much Jim this will be a big help, it's not leaking from the gasket, the parts list I have seen (CSML) it shows a couple of O rings and an oil seal within the tensioner, as the bike had been stood for more than 30 years they may of dried out. They may, possibly, reseal with use. Hoping to put her on the road this week, if the V5 turns up and I can get number a number plate made up.

Incase it's any help, I sorted the oil leak by replacing the seal (09284-10006-0000) It can be done without having to remove the tensioner, it fits behind the knurled wheel and spring. Hope it helps
