1982 1000ccengine advice wanted

Post by nigel murton » Mon Nov 30, 2020 3:32 pm

Guys

I am restoring a 1982 1000cc Kat, have honed cylinders, fitted new rings and valve stem seals.
Engine starts on first press of the button then starts to pump oil from the exhausts and I mean pump, its pure oil. Rings are the correct way up, letter n on top, ring gap is .010. Engine oils plugs and stops, clean plugs and it starts. Bike has 5,500klms on it. Any advice, its driving me nuts.

As I live in darkest Africa machine shops are very few and very far away....

oil level? have you overfilled the engine oil alternatively, have you checked your carbs havent leaked and dumped a load of petrol through your engine raising the oil level? have you checked the cylinder head breather isnt clogged or blocked? have you replaced the valve stem oil seals?

It seems the plugs would fowl right away and the engine die.

unless its coming down the exhaust valves and thus bypassing the combustion process altogether.

Guys

I am the owner of this 82 Katana. I have fitted rings, valve stem seals, all genuine Suzuki, parts had to come from Japan. I run it with cyl head breather pipe off and oil filler cap off, no compression in the engine case. Have removed the barrels again, there is oil on the top of the pistons. It seems as though oil is getting past the oil control ring. I have ordered a finer honing tool, will try that.

I am using fully synthetic oil could that be the some of the cause?

Many thanks to you guys who have replied to my query .
Cheers
Nigel

Yep with Blix here fully synth oil is way too thin for old GSX air cooled engines . 10/40 mineral or at the very least semi synth.

I suspect the issue is the gap between rings and honing .

For further info is it a 1000 with CV as per USA carbs or slide type as per UK.
