Re: Mikuni VM33 smoothbores
Good thought, could rig them up to a box easily enough, there's always a way (cut, paste, paint). Found a set on eB, 1990 off a 750 Gixxer, 38's, if sub £200 is reasonable? Seems pricey need to start saving the pennies, but probably low for a set which would probably suggest needing a complete rebuild. Need to check parts stock from Robinsons and work out needles/settings which I know FA about, but always willing to jump on the learning curb...
BTW, been looking through OSS and noticed the time, middle of the bloody night, where did the last 4 hours go? Its a bit vast that forum, easy to drift.

told ya to get a brew and biscuits didnt i! the old oss site fell down when its servers just couldnt cope with the traffic volumes, but it was ten times bigger than thee current one, and had 15 years of threads and tech info on it covering thousads and thousands of biks and builds. i lost months of my life in there. shame that much of it was lost.

Re: Mikuni VM33 smoothbores
There's enough there still for a good while -Its got me thinking though - 81' 1100 kat was my last bike before Kids arrived, sold it in a moment of misdirected belief that normal 'responsible dad types' don't ride bikes -twat thinking. Last year got a 750sz which i did up while having my leg rebuilt from a bicycle accident in Bristol - couldn't walk but could pull up next to the front door of work and hobble in -made sense to me- easy and fun to ride, hell of a howl on it, but its a fair bit different to the 1100- never had a chance to bond with the first one to the full, so yearned for another early one.
Looking through OSS and where I got the 1100, Stratford -on-Avon, and how its set up, carbs, cams, cooler, likely clutch and crank (pending investigation)- struck me at 3am this thing, which is a bit tricky to ride, has quite likely been down the strip at pod and its a known machine. Worth finding out right? Not sure who might know but OSS guys probably have knowledge of it if anybody does and worth an ask -And if we're halfway there i kind of fancy a bit of 'run what ya brung' - quite inspired mate, top site.

Re: Mikuni VM33 smoothbores
you do know that the 750 and 1100 frames are almost identical, and an 1100 engine will drop into a 750 frame with no modifications no welding and no structutal alterations, same bolts, same dimensions and aside from making a pair of new front lower mounting plates for the mod, its as close as you ever get to a straight swap. charging system is the same, ignition is the same, its all just swapped one to the other. use your smoothbores, and exhausts. bingo, you have an 1100 kat. the engine mounts i spoke of can be made from templates that are on oss, or i can post a plan so you can make your own.
just sayin.......

Re: Mikuni VM33 smoothbores
Think a more 'standard' 1100 be better by dropping a unit in the 750, or going for something less tuned up - bit much for me TBH, can't relax on the thing for a moment. Be a bloody shame to alter it backwards as its had all the mods - it will have to go, shame but hey ho....
Had definitely considered the engine swop into the 750 guys, and saw the plate diagrams too -easy swop I reckon thanks for the thought. Having gone through the OSS forum again, bit inspired and starting to get some quite radical thoughts. Be a shame to cut this one about as its close to standard too, just a good little bike.
So I'm starting to think about starting again with just a rolling chassis and taking it from there, something really unusual methinks, possibly have me burnt as a heretic but even thinking very different power units, toying with a real 'plug and play' based Kat... .
Goes against every fibre of my being and thoughts on what a bike is, but need to be challenged occasionally, have perspective on the world rewired so to say. Been looking at high power end motors, intent for general use or RWYB sessions -with long distance and fast recharge times -be an interesting project. Far from made of cash, but a bit of shed culture inventiveness can work wonders in the ingenuity dept can't it?
