Petrol tank
Petrol tank
Hi, my tank on my 400 is leaking, it’s been repaired before with petrol filler and tank seal, but now leaking again. Anyone have one for sale
or know where to get it repaired. Seen one on eBay, damaged, and still asking £400, mad. Thanks
Tony

Re: Petrol tank
Any older tank liners will fail nowadays unless it's been done with POR 15, or very similar ...so you could try doing t again yourself but you'd have to make sure the old liner in gone.
The rareness of 400 tanks or 250 as they are the same means a premium unless you can get one from Japan ...Smallkat??

Re: Petrol tank
Getting one from Japan is probably impossible without friends there. Yahoo Auctions Japan has now stopped us looking directly "From Wednesday, April 6, 2022, Yahoo! JAPAN is no longer available in the EEA and the United Kingdom" so you have to use something like Buyee. Buyee class a used petrol tank as prohibited though so will not bid for you. I have tried, as have the same issues with my Suzuki Gag bike.
I have had quite good success on the Gag tank using Silver Solder and a big high powered soldering iron to repair (don't have tools to braze). I can link to the kit I bought if you want to try that. I did a guide for another (small bike) club I'm in I can send as well. Let me know if you do.
Else there are some clever people about who could repair by welding in new metal, but that will not be cheap either.

Re: Petrol tank
Sorry, I don't have any contact for tanks.
Holtworks and TAB classics make tanks in the UK. I'm sure they can repair yours.

Re: Petrol tank
Here's the original article I wrote, hope that's OK. Links to the solder and the soldering iron are in the article.
This is the first time I have attempted this, possibly the easiest for the novice. What I didn't put in the article was that for the bigger holes I knocked the side in and cut and shaped some copper sheet to fit the hole (used Dremel with sanding drums to shape) and soldered around the edge (step 4).
I did get a few weeps of fuel from a couple and had to redo them, so I would advise to repair, do a rough primer spray to protect the bare metal and use like that until you are happy. You might still want to remove the old liner and seal again. I have used https://www.tankcareproducts.co.uk/ before but there are others.

Re: Petrol tank
Petrol tanks can't be ordered from Japan because there may still be petrol residue in the tank. had the same problem when I looked for replacement carburettors, even tiny amounts of fuel in the pressurised evironment of an aircraft cargo bay could be disastrous, don't think they put things like this on boats anymore, 250/400 petrol tanks are the same, mine had a tiny amount of rust near the filler cap when I bought it, but after filling and flushing it with Evaporust it completly dissapeared, would highly recommend this product.
