Those plugs block up the idle/pilot circuits, if they are not present your idle mixture cq the idle speed will be all over the place!

Yes, all present.
However a few seconds after being removed, in 24° sunshine, they looked like this -

Should they all be like #1 or should #1 be like the others?
Or is this normal?

It's normal; just crud from ethanol. I put NOS ones in the carbs above and took the carbs apart yesterday, looked like yours. Was just about to write a follow-up above since I did a little testing for you yesterday!

Had to re-set the floats on my GS850G (my Dutch->Old a/f English translations can be off sometimes). Set them with the needles fully seated instead of just touching them. Put the carbs back on without tightening one of the middle clamps on the intake boots and lo and behold: the bike ran like a big V8 on a big cam. All on its own... just like yours!

Long story short: you most definitely have an intake leak somewhere because our CV bikes will run like utter shaite if one is present.

Just had a closer look at the rubber boots... all nice fresh rubber but #2 from the air box to carb is missing the metal sealing ring.

Could be the culprit ?

Could be, but leaks before the carbs are less of a problem than leaks after the carbs for both vaccuum and mixture reasons.

I’ll put one in anyway..

Looking at the diagrams, there’s an o ring at the cylinder head. I’ll check those next

So, the screws for the inlet rubbers into the cylinder head came out surprisingly easy.

The o-rings look ok, but I’ll replace them anyway.

The good news is that my local Suzuki dealer is now open again to make orders

Good.. if you're talking about the JIS screws that hold the inlet boots to the head.. no good words about those :shock: . I usually replace all the invisible ones with Allens and keep the outer ones JIS. Saves the next person a lot of hassle.

So the saga continues...
Although it doesn’t seem quite so bad now, seems to rise to just over 2k revs, which is bearable.

Been doing other tinkering in the meantime. Changed the handlebars to be slightly higher and replaced the clutch and brake pipes with Venhill ones. Had a delay with the Spanish post losing a package and then me not measuring the brake line properly.
It’s a wonderful feeling putting the steering on full lock without catching your thumb

However, test run yesterday showed up another issue....
Bike revs freely at standstill but then bogs down at around 4K revs under load.
Felt like ignition coil issues I had years ago but they both check out ok.
Over the past couple of months the fuel in the carbs has completely evaporated a few times.
So carbs off again and another clean.
